Collection consists of court records for the Jefferson and Christian County Circuit Courts. These legal documents begin in 1780 when the counties were still a part of Virginia. They continue through 1835. The court records include petitions, judgements, depositions, deeds, lawsuits, and pleas of defendents. Some of the crimes that were recorded pertain to theft, assault, trespassing, "carnal knowledge", and the justice of slavery. There is an appeal to the court because of a vague verdict. Other documents include: compensation for damages, contracts, and obligations of payment. There is a wide varity of court records in this collection.
